Matariki Weekend and the celebration of the Maori New Year takes place June 24 - 26. Around the country there are events being set up to celebrate the beginning of the new year for many Maori.
Matariki is an abbreviation of ‘Ngā Mata o te Ariki Tāwhirimātea (‘The eyes of the god Tāwhirimātea’) and refers to a large cluster of stars, known in European tradition as the Pleiades.
From 2022, a public holiday marking Matariki will be held in June or July each year.
In New Plymouth The TSB Festival of Lights will hold a winter pop-up from June 23 - 26 with four nights of live entertainment, lights, kai and Whanau friendly entertainment.
The skate rink are the host venue for the inline hockey Matariki Series from June 24th. Spectators are welcome.
